In 1903 Panama declared there independent from Colombia and immediately signed the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty. Which authorized the U.S to start construction on the Canal in 1904. The Panama Canal is a man-made channel which joins the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. It started to be built by the U.S. in 1990 and was opened in 1914. It was over 51 miles long. It was not easy to build and the workers encountered many problems. Over 27,000 workers died while building the canal do to disease and injury. When the builders got to Culebra cut they ran into land slides. The landslides were problems because the clay was really soft and couldn't be moved easily. Workers thought it would be impossible to build the Canal. When building the dams they were excavating soil, and they ended up with way to much soil and nothing to do with the soil. When it would rain the soil would get wet again and cause more landslides. After all these problems Canal was opened. A boat sailing for San Fransisco form New York could save 7,872 miles. The first cargo ship to travel the Canal was named Ancon. There are series of 6 locks in two parallel tracks that raise and lower ships between the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. The Canal uses locks to let ships in and out of the Canal. The locks are about 1000 feet long. So all ship must be shorter to past through. Many ships are make to fit the Canal. The Canal was completed in 1913 by the United States after France failed twice at getting it built. The United States controlled it until 1999.
